MAREVA ANNUAL PICNIC IN THE PARK

It was cooler than the previous days  but the sun  was up on Saturday , August 4th , 2007 . The Mangaldan Residents Of Vancouver ( MAREVA ) held the annual picnic  at Locarno  Beach , a part  of Jericho Beach  in Kitsilano .

Many longtime residents , new arrivals and a few guests turned up . The night before the picnic day , Pepe, Carding Mejia  and Joel  M. Espinosa ( son of Lito ) prepared the "kanding pinapaitan and kaldereta " favorite putahes of most Mangaldanians , though it needs  time and effort  in the preparation  of such  delicacies .

The  picnic also served  as  the  announcement  and proclamation  of the new  officers  who were selected  by the board  earlier  during the day .  The new  Chairman is  Rustica Cervas Miraflor .  The new secretary is Lenny Cancino  Guiang  and the incoming treasurer  is  Angie  de Vera Encarnacion .  Outgoing Chairman is  Tess  Carvajal Marier  and  Marie Aquino Junio  is the outgoing  Secretary -Treasurer .

We took the opportunity to present  the latest  Mangaldanian arrivals  in Vancouver .  Marla Martinez  , Redentor  Ydia  , and  Rowena  Biay  introduced themselves officially .  Philip Fabia , a former councilor of Mangaldan , Nene ( nee Cervas) and husband  Manny Piedad  who are based in Seattle , Washington , were  officially  presented and welcomed in the group . They never miss MAREVA's functions and activities . Djoma Serafica de Guzman , my co-editor  in Aliguas Mangaldan website was  also  officially introduced  to the  picnickers . So many balitas were  shared  by  mankakabaleyans ..

Food was in abundance , as usual .  There were  games for the kids , musical chairs ( used  to be known as  "trip to Jerusalem " ) , egg  relay race ( for  kids and adults ) and pinata  (piniata ) . Mark Carvajal  Perez  was the winner  of  two  games . Lara C. Catunggal  hit  the " pinata"  after  some few  kids tried their " hitting skill ."  Kids  had a field day  picking the candies  that came from  the  belly of  "yoga bear ". It was a great day  for  all  picnickers . Some stayed for the final  display  of fireworks  for  the B.C.  Day celebration .  By the  way  , Canada  won  over  China and Spain in the fireworks  competition .

This girls ' group includes  Rusty Miraflor , Alma P. Cancino , Reyna Pagal , Estrella M. Espinosa , Connie Perez and Norma Mejia .

Another  "all girls squad " are Reyna , Norma , Estrella , Dolor Mejia , Rusty , Tess C. Marier and Marie A. Junio  just before  the grace before meals ( prayers )..

Mrs. Ester  P. Mejia , our special matriach of MAREVA  sits with daughter Estrella , daughter Norma , Fely , Mona Tan  and  newcomer Rowena Biay .

Gene and Dolly ( nee Cervas ) Catungal  showed the  "family solidarity " by attending with the  whole family  including children John Paul , Jessielie, Lara  and  Faye....With  them is  cousin Julie Ydia .

New  Vancouverites  from Mangaldan : Roque Capito , Redentor Ydia , not so new immigrant Philip Fabia , Rowena  Biay  and Marla Martinez .

Nene  ( nee Cervas ) and husband Manny Piedad  from Seattle were  asked to introduce  themselves . They have always  considered themselves  Mangaldanians  of Vancouver , including their two sons Brent and Christian , who always attend  all  our  functions .

Philip Fabia  was trying  to beat his opponent ..but we wonder  who  she is ?

 

Final  game for the kids was the pinata ( piniata ). Clarissa Carvajal  Cox  tried to hit  the "bear " but missed it . Other kids could hardly contain their excitement to  have their turn .

 

Matthew  C. Perez  tried  hitting  the pinata  but no luck .

Finally , the  Yoga bear's  bottom was "whacked "  and  candies  went flying all over . Kids had a field day  collecting their "loot ". Lara  C. Catungal was the lucky "whacker ".   

Outgoing Chairman Tess C. Marier  proclaiming Rusty C. Miraflor as the new Chairman of MAREVA. Rusty  expressed her gratitude  and  asked  for  continued  support and cooperation  of  members of our group . Congratulations , Rusty ! !

POST SCRIPT :

A week after the picnic , on August 12 , the new officers and members of the board held a meeting  hosted by Marie  in  Point Roberts at  the family cottage . Activities  for  the coming  year were discussed .  The Town Fiesta celebration  will  not be  celebrated  for 2008 due to the  coming STCS  Diamond  Jubilee  which  many Thomasian alumni  will be  attending in Mangaldan . However , in lieu  of  the fiesta , a May  dinner-dance is being  considered ... Stay tuned for any  development ..

And oh , yes , you ( in Australia and all Mangaldanians in other places) are all invited to visit us and join our picnic next year . Hi , Ramon and Mangaldanians of Australia . I am sure everyone in the picnic had a pleasant time . The pinapaitan and kaldereta ya kanding are still the "top of the line " among the favorite putahes . Why don't you "time" your Vancouver holidays during our picnic ? Our next picnic day tentatively will be the 1st Saturday of August 2008 which is August 2 , 2008 . No siopa so manplaplano ya man holiday dia , book your holiday during the last week of July to the second week of August , assuming that you have three weeks holiday . Just make sure you are here during the picnic pian natawayan yoy pinapaitan tan kaldereta ya kanding ya lutuin nen Carding Mejia , our kanding chef in Vancouver ..You are all welcome to join us next year ...
